In this 2 part remodel and renovation video series we will look at the design and construction of a roof addition over an existing dining room patio in Bozeman, Montana. Remodeling contractor Peter Brown will demonstrate how a simple shed roof transforms an average backyard into an inviting shaded outdoor retreat.
Peter Brown brings 30 years of renovation experience and a touch for artistic design to the home owner’s patio roof addition.
In part 1 we will look at the existing conditions, our renovation construction options, material selection, and the various decisions we made in arriving at a final patio roof addition design. Our objective is to cover this patio with a new roof, but at the same time to preserve the view looking out from the dining room. This innovative patio roof addition will be the prominent architectural feature on the west side of the home..
The underside of this covered patio will be highly visible from the interior as well as from outside back yard. With that in mind we decided to go with a robust, rough sawn exposed beam look. The edges of all the rough material will be eased. Everything exposed to view will be pre stained. Rustic elegance would describe the look we are trying to achieve with this new covered patio addition.
In part two of this video remodeling series we will discuss a variety of construction details such as techniques for working with rough sawn materials, tying the new patio roof addition into an existing roof, roof ventilation issues, and the artistic use of custom welded structural connectors for large rough sawn posts and beams.
The patio roof addition we have designed will greatly enhance the look of the home, as well as increase the day to day livability of both the back yard and the dining area. This renovation project is a good example of how to both improve and add value to the home.
