What is an ADU?
ADU stands for Accessory Dwelling Unit. You might know ADU’s by another name such as granny unit or mother-in-law-cottage. They are small house, sometimes over a garage–either attached or detached from a main house–that exist on a lot with another house.
ADU Design –Building Design Services Bozeman
This is the first in a series of programs that will follow the design and construction of an ADU I have created for a client right here in my own neighborhood.
As the city of Bozeman encourages infill, backyard Accessory Dwelling Units are becoming more popular. I offer Building Design Services Bozeman.
This new ADU replaces a single car garage. A priority was to create a building with a similar character as the main residence. We are using a material palette, analogous color scheme, and eave detailing that will give this building comparable characteristics to the existing home.
This is a 2 story building and to reduce visual mass, I have inset the upper wall planes on three sides to essentially project the second story up through the lower level roof planes. I would have preferred steeper roof planes but a 22 ft. building height limitation and side yard setback constraints kept the pitch at a low 4 in 12.
ADU regulations specify a maximum allowable living area of only 600 square ft. Space is tight so after numerous iterations within the city restrictions we finalized the design as 1 bedroom, 1 bath, a small kitchen, a combined living and dining area and a small second story deck. The living area is over a 2-car garage.
