A deck remodel project can make your home more spacious and comfortable, at a fraction of the cost of any other home addition. Decks increase your living area to the outdoors. A well-planned deck can become a creation that is as important a part of your home as the living room.

This is a short program describing a deck remodel design project I did for 47th Parallel Construction, the business of Guy and Brock Paddock here in Bozeman, Montana. My job was to work with Paddock’s clients to design and model a proposed deck extension, and then provide documentation to the homeowners association as to the scope of the project.
The existing deck was contained under the back patio roof plane. The owners wanted to replace the worn out wood decking as well as extending the deck to accommodate a hot tub. This deck remodel is ultimately an expression of its owner’s outdoor lifestyle. We modeled a number of variations, looking to achieve a unity of design and livability with the backyard area.
The final design extends past the patio roof and allowing room for the new tub. Rather than one large square platform, we recessed one side back and at an angle to keep it interesting. These full width oversized stairs double as an invitation for casual summertime seating. Trex decking was the material of choice as it holds up well to the sun and bare feet aren’t at risk for splinters. Guy and Brock Paddock worked fast and took advantage of good fall weather to finish the build just before an early snowfall. They did a nice job executing the design. This new deck remodel has enhanced the look and livability of the home and the owners are pleased.
