In this video blog Design / Build Contractor Peter Q Brown describes the process of building a custom horse barn in the Gallatin Gateway area outside of Bozeman, Montana.
Browns clients needed a design for a custom horse barn and a smaller utility building incorporating the detailing and rustic look of a small horse shelter they had seen on the website. This custom horse barn will shelter 2 horses as well as allow for storage of up to 8 tons of hay. The utility building is standard construction, but the barn is a post and beam structure. The exterior wall and roof framing for the barn is exposed to view from the interior.
The foundation is a concrete caisson and grade beam system. This is a steel reinforced grade beam that integrates with the caissons.
The steel roofing panels for both buildings are manufactured locally by Bridger Steel in Belgrade. The manufacturing process leaves each panel covered with a light coating of oil. We want the finished steel roofing to develop a rust patina. To achieve this look its very important to pressure washes the panels thoroughly to remove this oil before installing.
After the install the rust process is promoted by applying a solution of salt, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar onto this clean metal. Within a few weeks you can see the change and by summer the roof of this custom horse barn will have a fully developed rust brown color
